Anybody familiar with Oakland, CA?

My spouse will attend a 3-day, all-night event at the Loom on 1020 22nd Ave, Oakland, CA 94606. The cross street is Livingston. This is on the bay side of HWY 880, next to Embarcadero and 2-3 blocks from the Marina. It's a very industrial area.

The number of attendees is about 1000, but we don't know where they come from and what transit mode they will use. I have booked a room at the Executive Inn & Suites, which is just 10 min away on foot. I know that this hotel is very close to the venue, but I just wonder if this area is safe, particularly at night. I thought about staying at the Marriott in downtown Oakland (near 12th St Bart), but this means he will have to take an Uber to go to/from the Loom. At those hours, Uber may not be available.

Are there homeless encampments or lived-in RVs there? What is your advice? Thank you very much in advance.

I know you would walk by Quinn’s Lighthouse, a restaurant open until 10 most nights. I don’t think there are any homeless encampments there. I’ll try to find out more and let you know.

Thank you very much.

I live in Santa Clara County and haven't been to Oakland proper for a long time.

Have you tried contacting The Loom or the conference organizers to ask? I think it will be pretty deserted there at night, but if there are others staying at the Executive inn and Suites to walk with it might be okay. I don’t think I’d be comfortable walking alone there late at night. The Loom and Executive Inn and Suites probably have parking if he wants to take a car

I sent you a PM

I stay at the Marriot there. The BART station Oakland 12th Street Center is across the street. It is a large station stretching from the 11th Street exit (for Chinatown ) to the 14th street exit., a very good way to avoid the rain when it is storming outside. Follow the signs and take the 12 Street escalator.

No problems with me there as long it's day light, even though I do use the 12 Street Station at night sometimes. The BART train goes from the station to SFO directly.

I suggest staying at the Marriott. I don't know anything about Uber and its availability time-wise since I don't use it at all, only public transport

The Embarcadero is pretty well trafficked, and no homeless encampments. I don’t know about side streets. I live across the estuary, so tomorrow evening I’ll drive around Livingston and report back.

I will also drive around this weekend. My car needs some repairs scheduled for Friday. My sense is that it will be okay with 1,000 people coming and going from the event. Otherwise it is a bit away from the heart of the Embarcadero and could be a bit deserted in the late evening and early morning.

Google street view is your best bet here, go and use it to preview the route you would walk.

A quick look didn’t reveal any homeless encampments or RVs, the street view images are current, 7 months old.

I’d exit the hotel on the waterfront and take that path next to the water until you reach the marina then turn towards the Loom, might take a few more minutes but a nicer walk.

Thank you once again, everybody, for being so helpful!!!

My spouse wants to avoid getting stuck with no Uber in the middle of the night (concert is from dusk till dawn) and therefore has decided to book the Executive Inn. I contacted the Loom but did not hear back. I am hoping that everything works out for us. Fingers crossed.

Drove the area this evening around 8:30. Embarcadero has street lights and a moderate amount of traffic, but few pedestrians. No encampments or RVs. Livingston comes off of Embarcadero and doesn't have many street lights, but all the buildings have outdoor lighting, so while not brightly lit, no dark patches. 22nd street intersects Livingston and is a little darker, but buildings still have outdoor lighting. No visible encampments or RVs. As I was driving down Livingston, a bunch of young men exited a building (maybe the Loom?) and got in their cars and drove off. Not scary, but like some event had just let out.
I wouldn't walk around the area alone (but then, I'm a woman of a certain age), but probably would with at least a couple more people.
Definitely avoid Union Point Park (just south of the turnoff to Coast Guard Island) at night.

I drove the area early this afternoon. Ualagirl's description is accurate. I also wouldn't want to walk the area alone on a quiet night, BUT I think that if 1,000 people are getting out of an event then, they will be dispersing in all directions for their parked cars, getting Ubers, or walking to nearby hotels (there are several like yours just a few blocks away). So I expect that in that case I would be comfortable walking there. There is certainly no problem during the day. Once you get to Embarcadero, there is traffic, a restaurant that stays open until 10 pm nightly, some boat slips, and then the hotels.

Thank you, Barbara N and Ualagirl for driving by. I told my spouse to return to hotel only if he sees others walking in the same direction. Then, he won't be alone.

Once again, a big THANK YOU to all of you. The concert is now over and my spouse decided to take Uber to travel from the hotel to the Loom. The area is full of warehouses and deserted at night. I didn't go to the concert but was able to enjoy Oakland, Emeryville, and Berkeley during this stay. The restaurant scene is vibrant and affordable. Very different from the boring and overpriced South Bay.

Hi Barkinpark. Thanks for reporting back. I love Oakland and Berkeley, but you do need to be aware of where and when it's safe to walk around. I'm glad you had a good time and that uber worked out for your spouse.
