Any tips for Galveston, TX?

We're heading to a VRBO in Galveston soon (and yes, I know, the weather could be interesting.) Any input on places to eat, things to do, etc? Four adults, two pre-teens.

So lots of folks head to Galveston for the beach - but gulf water isn't really my jam. I think Moody Gardens is cool and you can certainly check out the Strand for some shopping and a bit of an old-timey feel. It may be swamped if the cruise ships are un/loading. If the pre-teens like ships or history, you have some possibilities there with the Elissa and the Naval Museum (fun submarine - although take some bug spray - mosquitoes love that island). If you have a car, which I assume you will, head up 45 to NASA - it's awesome. As far as food - I'm going to suggest shrimp, shrimp, and more shrimp.

Johnson Space Center isn't that far away. It isn't up to the quality of Kennedy Space Center visitor's center so if you've been there you may be a bit disappointed, but it is interesting and you might find an afternoon there a great deal of fun.

It has been years since I've been to Galveston but I enjoyed the Railway Museum there quite a bit.

Hello, I grew up in Galveston, still have family there.
Things to do - the beach: go far west beach or east beach and check out the jetty. Mornings and evenings are beautiful.
Birdwatching.
Historical Homes - Bishop's Palace, others. Explore the wharves.
Food: Rudy and Pacos (upscale), Mosquito Cafe, Trattoria La Vigna, either of the Marios locations. Gaidos is the classic Galveston seafood experience. Sonnys for shrimp poboys.
The city is small enough to explore on bike, foot or by driving.
Its beautiful, and has a funky charm. Enjoy.

Reporting back: we've had a great time in Galveston, with sunshine, no rain, and 75 degrees. markinaustin, you are my hero for your excellent dining suggestions. Our son and his wife and our grandchildren had a really nice time. Mario's was a true RS "off the beaten path" place for Italian food. We also loved the grilled muffalettas and shrimp poboys at Sonny's (all those signs to watch our language, and plaques of how many days in a row various medical students drank there in the 90s - ha ha.)

We spent lots of time on the beach, as well as birdwatching and cruising the beautiful old houses downtown. There was also a fun weekend art show in the Postoffice street area. We had ice cream at Hey Mikey's and also rolled ice cream at Cordray Drug Store. Kids had their first putt putt experience at Magic Carpet Golf - respect for their creative decor!
