Anyone fly to Usuhaia Argentina and have any fight tips. We would like to avoid sitting in Buenos Aires for 19 hours for our connection!! Thanks in advance. Coming from either Huntsville, Alabama or Atlanta.
It's been, gosh, about 10-11 years now since our Antarctica expedition.........but, when we went (National Geographic/:Lindblad), we flew into Buenos Aires (stayed over one night as part of the expedition) where we met the group, had a brief city tour, dinner, etc., breakfast, and then we all took a chartered flight to Usuhaia. In researching what expedition to take, at that time, I had read that it was not uncommon for flights to be delayed/cancelled going into the Usuhaia due to weather/fog........so, we were comforted knowing we would not miss our ship, since the group was all on the same charter flight, if we had some unforeseen flight problem.
Flying home after the expedition, I just remember a really, really long day. There was a delay with our chartered flight back to Buenos Aires (I think take-off problems in Buenos Aires, so we had to wait for it to arrive at the airport in Usuhaia, and I was worried we might miss our connection thru Buenos Aires to get home.........it was tight, but we made it.
So, long way of saying, build in some "cushion time" for your arrival......best to not arrive the day your ship is due to depart.. If flying in on your own (outside of package arrangements), I would actually recommend arriving two days ahead.
If you have not already selected your expedition, we highly recommend National Geographic/Lindblad and have taken three different expeditions with them. Antarctica was our first, then Iceland/Greenland, then the Sea of Cortez.
Regardless of which expedition, you will LOVE Antarctica....a truly lifetime experience. Mid-January is the best time to go. Some Penguin chicks have hatched and others are still nest sitting. A few days it was warmer there than Nashville.
Safe travels.
