Alaska in spring

What is Alaska like in spring, say May and June, for a road trip tour? Is there still snow? Is it muddy? Are you able to do snow-free hikes? Bugs?

It just depends on where you want to go. The coastal areas will be snow free but higher up will be muddy and snowy depend on how high. We were there first week of June. Coastal areas were fine but mountain pass were hit and miss and sometimes very chilly.

May- June is high season for snow melt, bugs, and breaking an ankle trying to walk over thawed tundra. The snow will be gone off the low ground for just about everything south of the Artic Circle. Remember, by mid-may you're looking at 20 + hours of sunlight. In places like Fairbanks it will be getting up into the 90's, maybe even 100. The rivers will be high, with ice still coming down on the major ones. Mosquitos will be on a twice a day cycle, along with anything else that flys, crawls, or bites. It's ideal time for driving to places like Circle, Cheena Hot Springs, Valdez, Denali, etc.

June is a fine time to do a road trip in Alaska. Our first road trip from the lower US to Alaska was in June and July. Just be prepared for hot and cold, beautiful blue skies and misty rain and the sun never setting. If want to camp in Denali National Park be sure to reserve your spot as soon as possible. We have taken two road trips and 3cruises ranging from June to September. The landscape and animal encounters change with the seasons. It is a grand adventure driving to Alaska. The drive through the Canadian countryside is spectacular also.

We did our Alaska cruise and trip to Denali late in the season, in early September. The mosquitos were gone by then.

We drove from Iowa to Homer, Alaska, starting around May 15 several years ago. No problems. Weather was fine
