Air New Zealand carry-on restrictions

Does anyone have experience flying Air New Zealand with carry-on luggage? I’m hearing that they are very strict with weighing and measuring your bag. We are flying from LAX to Auckland (economy class) - The website states that you get “one carry-on bag plus one small item, like a handbag or thin laptop bag”. The carry on bag can only weigh up to 15 lbs.

So I have a couple of questions:
1) How strict are they? Do they weigh and measure the bag?
2) Is there a size limit for the extra “small item”? How big can that be? Would they accept a daypack/backpack as the second item?

I flew Air NZ on three flights last month. If you have a wheeled suitcase, just plan to check it. The carry-on needs to be 7kg or under. There are scales in the baggage area so you could weigh your carry-on items to make sure they complied. They don’t charge to check your bag and I saw very very few wheeled bags being brought on the three flights that I took. My first flight was part of a group tour and our tour guide advised us upfront of the weight restrictions and that we would need to check bags.

My carry-on item was a daypack and my personal item was a purse. Air NZ did not weigh my carry on bags, but it was pretty obvious that mine were under 7kg. I had packed the daypack with a change of clothes, electronics, 3-1-1 bag, etc. and it weighed about 4kg.

A few more things about NZ airports:

I got pulled aside at security checkpoints in both Wellington and Auckland for things that have never been an issue in any other airport:
1) Do not pack any batteries (even AA or AAA) in your checked bag. Any spare batteries in your carry-on either need to be taped together or stored separately. I had packed 2 spare AA batteries and 2 AAA batteries in a ziploc bag in my carry-on. I got pulled aside in security and they told me it was allowable to have the spare batteries, but they could not be “loose” because the nodes might touch and start a fire (these were not lithium batteries). Anyway, the security guy put them all in different places in my carry-on (e.g., 1 in the toiletry bag, 1 in a packing cube, etc.). They also inspected every item that had batteries installed. I had a battery-operated electric toothbrush and noise cancelling headphones.
2) Security saw a tube of sunscreen in my 3-1-1 bag that got flagged. It was under 100 ml so it was ok, but it seemed at least half the bags ahead of me were getting pulled for screening and they usually seemed to be closely inspecting the contents of people’s 3-1-1 bags. Don’t be alarmed if your carry-on gets selected for extra screening.

It took me an hour and fifteen minutes to get through passport control and security at Auckland when flying back to the U.S. I don’t know if that is normal or whether there was an issue on the day I flew back. I flew on Feb 28th.

Probably safe to assume they didn't go to the bother of making the rules to just ignore them. .

" plus one small item, like a handbag or thin laptop". That is certainly vague. Suspect how large/small you pack is and how full it is being allowed will be up to the gate keeper the day you fly.

The robo-chat gave this response:

You can also take a handbag, duty free bag or laptop bag. If part of your trip includes codeshare flights or other airlines, please check their allowance as well. See our website for more details.

No personal experience.

I just returned from New Zealand however I did not fly Air New Zealand. Just as an FYI, I have very closely followed a facebook group, New Zealand Travel Tips, and have read multiple threads about Air New Zealand and the carry-on restrictions. If you are not a member of this group, I highly recommend it. I got so much help there with planning and many folks get help from the group while they are traveling in NZ. You can also get discounts on many activities through the group. Regarding your issue, my recollection from following the group posts on Facebook, is that Air New Zealand is quite strict. I would also say that just because some people might have been able to get by bending the rules, doesn't mean you will. I would follow their guidelines. I would also carefully follow the guidelines regarding what you can bring into the country as it relates to foods, medications, hiking poles and boots, etc. Because they check.

I don't know the set up at LAX for check in, but recently flying home from Brisbane on Air NZ they had staff checking and approving/tagging carry on bags in the self check in/bag drop area.

I would assume that the 'small item' in addition to a carry on, would be something that would go under the seat in front easily. ie. that it wouldn't be a wheeled bag, or a backpack stuffed to capacity, but that it could be a tote bag, handbag, soft backpack or laptop bag.
