About Cruises

I have discovered that many members on this forum have taken a cruise, are going to be taking a cruise or thinking about a cruise.

I am suggesting that a page be dedicated just for and about cruises.

I am fully aware of cruisecritic and have been on CC for years. I find it very good to get reviews of ships as well as itineraries but not ports or excursions. For that, I prefer R S.

I also use CC to join my Roll Call and go to the M & G when on the ship.

Um yheah, probably not going to happen. While some on this forum do occasionally cruise, CruiseCritic is full of those who travel mostly on cruises, like yourself. Big difference! However, doesn’t hurt to ask, but you should ask the webmaster, not the general forum.

We have done 21 ocean cruises since 2010 and enjoyed them all. Our favorite lines are Celebrity, Royal Caribbean and NCL.

An Alaska cruise from Vancouver to Alaska, going to Glacier Bay and the Hubbard Glacier is great. Skagway is the best port, take the train up to Canada. We did a great rain forest hike as well.

Med cruises are great, departing from Barcelona or Athens.

This isn’t a cruise forum rather one for independent travelers and/or those who take Rick Steve’s’ tours. Honestly, I was very surprised when RS published a book about Mediterranean Cruise Ports.
For those who enjoy cruises, there is a lot offered on Cruise Critic. And if posters want to read about cruises, go ahead and post here but I don’t think there will be many contributions. Perhaps I am wrong about this as evidenced by the fact that RS did publish a cruise port book. Just not for me.

geovagriffith .....

21 cruises! Wow!

I have met people who like yourself have done many cruises, sometimes over 50.

When I sailed Hawaii, there was a couple who had taken the exact same cruise 35 times and there was a couple who was taking the cruise for the third time in a row. When I sailed new York to Bermuda, there was a couple taking the same cruise for the Ninth time. Unfortunatley, for this one, they were having a terrible glitch with billing and spending a lot of time at Guest Services.

Love meeting the other cruisers, even those who are not very happy with the cruise.

Ypu all have added and continue to add so much to my life.

Hi Tammy

I kinda think that I am asking the webmaster when I post on forum because I believe that many if not most of our posts are monitored by webmaster.

And I consider my post a discussion about cruising and cruises for those on forum

I've done 20, I believe the current total is.

And I am an independent traveller, if ever there was one.

Hi Suki

Well I travel alone. I pre cruise and sometimes post cruise. The cruise is just me and I mostly take planned excursions as one person .

So I consider myself an independent traveler.

I am on cruisecritic but I like this site better for discussing my pre cruise and also discussing some of my excursions.

I think cruisecritic is too big and or too crowded. Maybe it is too much information.

I prefer websites and forums that are wise enough to stay in their own lane. And while RS has published 2 guide books on cruise ports, they are primarily about cruise PORTS. If I want to read or discuss cruising, I go to a cruise site - mainly Cruise Critic. Which has its own ports of Call forums, and which focus on those ports and excursions. If I want to read or discuss land travel I go to a site that focuses on that - often here.

I believe RS and the webmaster are fully aware of their demographics; if they felt there was sufficient demand for a cruise subforum there would have been one long ago, since the first Med Cruise Ports guide was published way back in 2011.

"I kinda think that I am asking the webmaster when I post on forum because I believe that many if not most of our posts are monitored by webmaster."

I do not believe this to be true. I think the Webmaster and his team only monitor posts if someone hits the REPORT button or otherwise emails them to let them know there is a problem.

I like the way that the forum is designed by destination with a few additional categories. People have been able to ask questions or make comments about cruising in the current format without any difficulties other than the occasional grump who tells them to look elsewhere or tries to shame them for making different travel choices. Let me clarify immediately that I am not referring to Tammy’s post or any other post on this thread which are perfectly appropriate.

For example, if I am on a cruise to Norway, I can ask Norway related questions in that forum.

I have a vague memory that a couple of years ago the Webmaster said this was under consideration for sometime after the pandemic. Am I imagining this?

I'm active on Cruise Critic and do get lots of info there, for example I've booked excursions in Vietnam with folks from my Roll Call. That said, there's value in a spot here too. Many Cruise Critic contributors are definitely not RS style travelers. I hope if RS adds a Cruise section it won't be taken over by people who hate cruising.

What Pam said. The tech staff does not have near enough time to read every post. The Webmaster wrote at one point that he very much appreciates members asking him before they post something that could be considered controversial or outside the sphere of this forum.

That said you can always post a question about a cruise, but I doubt there will be a dedicated section to it. Like Carol NR said, you can ask a question in the Destinations forums, even if it involves a cruise. In fact, you said that you prefer getting info about ports and excursion destinations here, so why not just use the Destinations forum for that?

I would say that the "General Europe" subforum is suitable for questions on multi-country cruises.
In any case, many people including myself use the All Topics view: the post volume is not that high here, and it is the best way to see all the questions that I might be able to help with.
