This is Keith Lockhart , conductor of The Boston Pops , tracing Charlie's footsteps - https://youtu.be/3aKHVgqsjxE
When the Kingston Trio recorded this novelty single, all the fuss was over a 5-cent fare increase Worth more at the time than now, but the real value has been in the decades of fun. Pops conductors, as a breed, call attention to themselves and I hope an encore to this post puts him in another Boston staple, the marathon.
One of the great protest ballads.
I still have my Charlie Card ready to go with me if I head to Boston. I love that they named the metro card after the song!
That is so awesome! The video must have been made quite a few years ago as Mayor Menino who is no longer with us had a cameo in this. Thanks for the trip down memory lane from a former MA resident.
Where is George O'Brien?
And where is George's wife with the sandwich??
MEA CULPA -- of course it was Charlie's wife who through the open window handed Charlie a sandwich as the train went rumbling through.
Scollay Square Station, now Government Center Station. And it was Charlie's wife, not George's. George was apparently running for Mayor at the time, trying to get Charlie off of that train.
Hi, Steven
Thank you so much for the video. Brings back wonderful memories.
From a former Bostonian.
Steven, thought I'd would get to see Keith Lockhart this summer at Tanglewood on Parade, but this will not be our typical summer for the Boston Symphony or the Boston Pops, as everything is cancelled. Next year. I believe Keith Lockhart is a runner, so maybe there will be a Boston Marathon video in the future.
Very grateful for Massachusetts' Governor Charlie Baker's response to the virus, as our numbers are going down, unlike the governors of Texas, Arizona, Florida, and others. We all want to travel again, but until ALL our citizens get on board, we may be waiting for quite some time, which makes me sad. Be safe everyone.
As a BU alum, it's the above ground green line that makes me nostalgic
