A happy tip thread *with Obama Cookie report*

We spent the weekend in Ottawa. It was lovely! Such a festive Christmas atmosphere in the Byward Market area. Had to buy a Christmas theme toque!

Anyway, we were at Le Moulin de Provence at Byward. It is a bakery. When we paid there was a note at the checkout in very large font: "WE DO NOT ACCEPT TIPS".

How wonderful not to see the dreaded screen asking how much you want to tip at a place where you'd never have considered tipping in the not-so-long ago times.

By the way, the bakery proudly sells "Obama Cookies". Apparently he quite enjoyed them when in town.

Lovely touch!

It's getting to where I worry what will happen to my food if I don't tip .... ;-/

I agree! I hate that staff can see whether you tip or not. The worst cases are in restaurants where the servers hover next to you watching you input tip info into the machine. One server was so close she was practically breathing down my neck. When I asked her to move, she said she was told not to let the card machine out of her sight. I told her she could easily see it from 4-5 feet away.

Good to hear!
But…now we all need to know what the Obama cookie is like!
What flavour? Crunchy or soft? ;)

Just a wild guess S J, but I don’t think it was either soft or orange ;)

I didn't try an Obama Cookie. They appeared to be hard/crunchy cookies, because they were shaped and decorated into various designs. I prefer chewy cookies. They must sell, though, because they had a lot of them on display ready to go.

As chance would have it we are going back to Ottawa in two weeks so I will taste test the Obama Cookies and report back.

Obama has been out of office for 8 years....won't they be stale???

An individual cookie may have freshness term limits, but the title of the cookies remains perpetual. Are there Secret Service bakers, I wonder?

A sign about No Tips Allowed helps relieve pressure for customers and staff, and eliminates any doubt. Glad the Ottawa weekend was so nice!

We’ve just gotten home from a Vietnam and Cambodia. In Hanoi, there’s bustling restaurant where celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain once took President Obama for Bún Chà, a noodle soup with grilled pork, chilies, and vegetable toppings. The dish is now nationally known as “Obama Bun Cha.” The restaurant gave out moistened towel wipes in packages printed that theirs was the Bún Chà enjoyed by U.S. President Barack Obama.

There was no need to mention that tips were not accepted, because they aren’t even considered there.

Andrea, glad that you enjoyed Ottawa. Agree with you 100%.

Didja catch last night's episode of CBC 'Marketplace'?
It dealt with the whole issue of tipping, owners keeping the money and plenty more.
One expert's advice was to refuse to tip - send a message.
His comment's timing was ironic coz we had just the day before, begun to refuse to tip whenever it appeared to be a silly, unrealistic request. Cue the trendy salad company where we have to go fetch our order, asking for 22%!!
I am done. The end.

So I tried an Obama cookie. Not for me. A hard cookie, non-descript taste, hard icing. Not recommended, at least in terms of taste.

The only local massage companies that my wife and I go to are ones with explicit NO TIPS ALLOWED policies.
I am done. The skin

Vindication! I warned they might be stale old cookies, from almost 8 years ago. :-)

If someone were to ask me for recommendations of a bakery in the Byward Market area, Le Moulin wouldn’t be on the list. My favourite in that area is a tiny place called Elina Patisserie just down the street from the National Gallery.
