6 Nights in Transylvania: how to break up our time

Hello,

We have only six nights in Transylvania and we want to focus our time on Brasov, Sibiu, and Sighisoara. Any suggestions on what cities/how many nights to stay? We are more B&B/small inn/HomeAway folks than fancy hotel people, and I know that Romania has very plentiful and lovely accommodations even out of the main cities. I originally thought 4 nights Brasov and 2 nights either Sibiu or Sighisoara but cannot decide which makes most sense and which of the two towns would be a nicer experience.

Also, I'd love to see the Maramures area, but am not sure if six nights total allows time to get that far north. Driving distances appear short, but I bet longer than anticipated. Don't want to do many 'one night stands' in terms of lodging, or be stressed out trying to see too much in too little time.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts you may have on my planning questions!

I used public transportation when I visited Romania in 2015, so my experience was very different from what yours will be like. All three of your cities/towns are very nice, but Sighisoara has a different feel due to size (it's much smaller), terrain (it's on a hill) and how touristy it is. I think it's also hundreds of years older, but history was never my strong suit. I'm not sure I'd want to spend two nights in Sighisoara, but I prefer to encounter my fellow tourists in larger cities where they are more easily escaped.

Maramures is fabulous, but I'm not sure you can fit it in. On the other hand, 4 nights is a lot of time in Brasov. The way I handled Maramures was to take a 2-day tour organized by a hostel in Cluj-Napoca. We saw a great deal in those two days, but we were on the move for considerably more than 8 hours a day. (Our driver was typical of the Romanians I met: He worked very hard.) If you could get yourselves to C-N with time for a two-day tour, I think you'd be very pleased. The sights in that area are scattered and often in small towns; having a knowledgeable driver would save a lot of time. I think my cost was about $130-$140, which was a screaming bargain.

On this forum I'm always telling people I think they're trying to do too much, but in your case, I believe Maramures is worth considering. It's such a different experience.

Thank you very much for your feedback, and for your idea on the private tour. I will definitely consider your ideas when we do our final planning. I appreciate your taking the time to respond to me.

We really liked Sibiu and ended up spending an extra day there- wonderful outdoor squares and many interesting museums and sites. Sighisoara was very touristed; cute but not our favorite. We got around by a rental car (Sixt) from Bucharest. Driving wasn't bad in Transylvania, much worse in other areas.
