Wide feet

Let's talk wide feet. Not every shoe manufacturer makes shoes for wide feet.

For years I wore Rockports because they were comfortable and looked like dress shoes. Well, close to dress shoes.

But now, they are not giving me the cushioning I need for long days on my feet. Especially in the soles. I have gel inserts but they don't help much in the front of the shoes.

I'm looking for other suggestions of comfortable walking shoes that look dressy and come in wide sizes.

FYI--Ecco does not come in wide sizes.

I would "shop at Zappos," an on-line store. Set your parameters for the shoe style you are looking for, width, and size. Zappos has free shipping both ways. Most of the shoes I take when I travel have been bought at Zappos.

Try Vionics, they have great arch support and come in wide sizes (for sure the women's shoes since I wear wides). I have had plantar fasciitis and swear by them. They're also available on Zappos so free shipping even with returns so you can try on as many as you wish!

Merrell's come in wide sizes, best shoes I've ever worn. All I take to Europe is a pair of low cut hikers, feet never get tired.

Alegria and Keen. Alegria provides a slimmer insole for wide feet that allow the foot to spread. I have wide feet but their regular shoes are wide enough for me. Keen's often have a more boxy toe which gives my toes plenty of room.

Check out SAS. I have wide feet, and can always find something at SAS that fits and is comfortable. They have a wide range of styles and sizes. Men's shoes go up to 14 .5 EEE, women's to 12.5 WWW. They're well made, made in the USA. Great walking shoes.

Sold shoes for 12 yrs - Dunham were very popular and came in some wide sizes - up to 6E (2E, 4E, 6E), and maybe wider in some of the basics...now, style numbers could be diff between Canada and the US, but the 6000BK was their basic, looked like the Rockport World Tour. (The BK is for black - I can't rem what brown was...either BR or BN). Waterproof and with a 'rollbar' for stability. Owned by New Balance.

Now, I've been out of the shoe racket since 2011, so not sure if all this still holds to be true.

SAS - most comfortable shoes I've owned. Expensive, however, and not exactly stylish.

Recommend New Balance. My husband has several pairs of NB walking shoes and they have the support he needs. He has a couple of pair that are brown and look very much like dress shoes. NB were recommended to us by my foot doctor. Our podiatrist says NB is the only shoe he ever wears. They come in wide sizes. Look at L.L.Bean.com for a good selection. Or go to the NB store at malls around the country to get their fit specialist to fit you (usually the store manager).

The other dress shoe my husband has are a pair of Bass. He says the support is great. They are brown and look much like the shoes Rick Steves is wearing in some of his travel videos. They are one step up more dressy than the NB. Check to see if there is a Bass outlet store near you. They are in many of the outlet malls.

I do not think the Sketchers brand of shoe mentioned by someone has any support. They look nice in photos, but for someone who needs a lot of support for doing a lot of walking, they just are not going to be nearly as supportive as New Balance.

I have wide feet and have had good experiences with Clarks shoes and select Born models.
M husband wears an EEEE and recently found a pair of Clarks he loves. I can find out what model they are if you'd like.

All of the Eccos I have do have a wide toe box. If you need something wider, I am not sure where to go.

I am a woman, but I always found Ecco (and all Italian shoe brands, for that matter), to run narrow. I always end up coming back to Clarks and Dansko. Not sure if their practice of wider, rounder toe boxes carries through to the men's side, but worth a try!

I suggest ordering 4-6 well-chosen pairs on Zappos with the full intention of sending back 3-5 of them! If none fit, send them all back and try another set. It takes a couple of tries sometimes but no shoe store has that variety. (Unless you live near a Nordstrom, perhaps.)

What Jane said-SAS are very well made and come in different widths. My local store will stretch shoes a bit if needed too. I find that SAS shoes cost twice as much but last three times longer than other shoes, great if you hate adjusting to new shoes.
