Waterproof shoes for Italy in late October

I'll be traveling to Rome, Florence and Cinque Terre the last week in October...does it make sense to buy waterproof shoes?

I can't say if you will need waterproof shoes, but I can tell you that my waterproof Ahnu hiking shoes have worked great for me when traveling. They are a good sturdy hiking shoe that work well on cobblestone or trail.

I absolutely agree. I have 2 pairs of Ahnu Montara boots. One pair got quite the workout in Istanbul, Greece and Italy between 3 October and 11 November, including rain and some significant puddles. They were also great for rough terrain, including dirt, rocks, uneven pavement and cobblestones. They look great with pants and actually make my size 9.5-10 feet look small!

Clark's Wave shoes are worth looking at if you want a waterproof dress casual shoe. Super comfortable too.

I like Merrells, they served me well in Ireland last year.

We always wear waterproof shoes since it can rain anytime.

On one October trip to Italy we got caught in a downpour in Pisa -- took several days for shoes to dry out and we were glad to have a backup pair. But that was one day out of 30 -- if you don't have waterproof shoes already I'd go with the odds and just wear what you were planning. Maybe pack a extra pair of wool socks which keep your feet warm even when wet.

We always spray our regular shoes with waterproof shoe spray. It works quite well.

...took several days for shoes to dry out....

When our "waterproof" Gotetex-lined and water repellent (Nikwax) treated boots were soaked (in the UK) we dried them by stuffing them with crumpled up newsprint to absorb the water. If really soaked, several change outs with dry paper were needed, but boots were ready to go by the next day. The boots dried as fast or faster than our wool socks.

That said, how wet can your boots get walking around on pavement. Watch where you walk and don't step in deep puddles.

Edgar, "Several days to dry out" came from walking back from the tower to Centrale through 40 minutes of heavy rain (and taking some wrong turns so it took longer) with puddles... and my husband was wearing sneakers. For our Christmas markets trip to Austria few years later he used Nik-wax on everything -- lesson learned!

In Italy in late October, I'd probably still be wearing my sandals many days, and they happen to be water friendly, and to dry faster than heavier shoes would do.

My husband and I both like KEEN and they make a great truly waterproof shoe. We have their sneakers (just be sure to get the waterproof ones - we get ours on Amazon - just search KEEN waterproof). Our new favorite is KEEN Newport H2 Water Sandals- we each got these a few months ago. We are going to Italy for 3wks in October and we are taking our KEEN sneakers and water sandals as our only shoes. They are high quality, good arch support - we can walk all day on Cobblestone and endless steps in both of these style shoes and still feel good at the end of the day. Our 2nd choice would be Merrell.

Waterproof shoes should breathe, or claminess will be a problem.
