For those who are planning on travelling to Ireland, you may want to invest in some waterproof shoes. I purchased Merril's and they proved quite effective. During frequent showers the last thing you need is for your feet to get wet.

I love my Merrills too! I have the Jungle Mocs and they kept my feet nice and dry.

There are also some Keen lace up shoes that are waterproof. I have used mine on several trips. Probably that style is not available but there are some newer styles that would work.

I have two pairs of Merrells, and both are very comfortable for all day walking. They also last long without wearing out.

If you get caught out without waterproof shoes use a trick a friend of mine uses when riding his motorbike and he hasn't come prepared.
Use a plastic bag between two pairs of socks – put your first pair of socks on, then pull a shopping size plastic bag over your foot then follow up with another pair of socks.
It’s not an ideal solution but it can get you out of a wet feet situation. Your feet do sweat a bit being wrapped up in a plastic bag but they do stay dry and very warm.
I wouldn't recommend it for long term use,
