I arrived in Barcelona this morning 10 hours traveling and just noticed my ankles are very swollen. This does not happen to me at home. Should I be concerned or is this common after flying long distance?
Very common. It doesn't happen to me, but I know lots of people and have read on this forum, that lots of people wear SOCKWELL COMPRESSION SOCKS when flying long distances. It's also important to get up and move every couple of hours. We are going to Italy in October & one of my friends gave my 2 pair of Sockwells for my BDay, so I will be wearing them this time. I have seen them on Amazon.
Swollen ankles w/elevation changes & prolonged seating is normal - and should resolve w/mobility, hydration, & elevation. If not, could be hypertension related. Blood clots are usually behind the knee and cause pain with walking/foot flexion or extension - seek medical attention. But - ankle edema/swelling can be very normal on long flights/sitting.
Chinalake67 is spot on about getting up and walking about during long flights. Works wonders. Compression socks are also available at Travel Smith and Magellan's web sites.
The key questions- has the swelling resolved and is it painful? If no and yes, respectively, get medical attention. If yes and no, don't worry about it.
You have a medical issue. This is not the place to get medical advice. See a pharmacist or doctor.
I agree with Monte. It is not uncommon but it is not expected either. What is your age? You COULD have a medical issue (most serious blood clot - it should be painful but it may not be) If it does not quickly, tomorrow morning, resolve itself then I would seek medical attention. If it returns frequently, then there is mostly an underlying problem related to circulation. It should not be ignored.
The swelling has completely gone away!! Thanks all. Now time to enjoy Barcelona :-)
Tom was right...
He usually is in matters like this, as he is able to use his years of experience.
