Shoes for tours

I am getting in shape for a Baltic cruise in August. I am getting my legs in shape by walking miles in my athletic shoes. My question is should I be walking in the shoes that I am planning to wear during my excursions the same amount, or just a mile or two at a time to make sure that they are broken in?

You can use both strategies. Get your legs in shape! Get your shoes in shape!

cindy, I would start walking more and more miles in the shoes you will be wearing until you can wear them comfortably all day.

And hopefully u are using proper socks that wick moisture away. Also consider an orthotic like spenco or other for support and cushion.
It really makes a difference for thise heavy walking days.

You may have many shoes in your closet but you wear a couple pair to walk around town, go for coffee, visit the farmers market. Take those.

The one thing I would caution you about is daily, lengthy walks in your travel shoes between now and August. That's a long time and could add up to a lot of miles. Even good shoes do not last forever with heavy use. I recommend being sure the shoes are broken enough for the amount of walking you expect to do on tour, then doing most of your remaining walks in other shoes. I have some less-expensive but still decent shoes I use for most of my on-foot excursions at home.

I live 1 mile from my local movie theatre, so when breaking in new shoes that's the first walk with no stops that they get, after a bit of stop-and-start walking, like to the grocery store. Steady walking lets you know right quick if there'll be blisters.
