Dansko's (they have Mary Janes) are super comfortable and great for walking imo.
Clark's has Mary Janes with a substantial sole/support. I've worn them for city walking and woodsy hiking when traveling. I find Clark's in general to be the most comfortable shoe for my foot. Fit and comfortable shoes are very individualized, but try them on if there is a Clark's near you.
I wore Clarks Wave Treks for 26 days in Spain. It was my first pair but not my last. I have plantar fasciitis and it never bothered me while wearing these shoes. They are water-proof! We walked an average of 8 miles a day!
I own and like Wolky's, Keens. Arcopedia and others. You really have to try them on- arch support and wide toe box are my comfort points.
I've used the Merrell Eluma (sp?) Breeze. I would recommend trying on several brands to see what works for you. I found a website or two that would spring for free shipping and ordered several brands to see what worked best for me.
I like Abeos from the Walking Company and I'll be taking a pair on my trip to England and Scotland in May. But I would never consider them or any shoes like them for long distance walking on any kind of surface. And especially not for any kind of hiking in cold, wet, muddy Ireland or Scotland in the fall.
Those MJ's are great for short walks or for going out to dinner in after a long day on my feet.
But for that long day, my feet and the rest of me prefer Ahnu Montara high topped boots with Sockwell circulator knee high compression socks.
I have tried a lot of brands.. but my feet like Naots best.
Zulily.com is having a big Clarks sale right now - stuff sells out FAST, no returns are allowed, and you need a Zulily account to even view the items, which is all annoying, but they have a few mary jane type shoes and my feet are happy to walk miles and miles in Clarks shoes, so I thought I'd post to alert people.
Natalie, I love my Clarks unstructured Mary Janes. I have walked all over Rome, parts of the English countryside, and Prague in my un.Lindas and am thankful to Motorgirl for her recent heads up on the zulilly sale! I took advantage of that to get a pair of un.Helmas.
I love the Keen's and Clarks's styles but haven't found wide widths. Abeo has mary janes in wide widths. Great for city walking but not hiking. I do feel very stable in them.
Clarks is a good way to go.
More of a woven T strap but very comfortable by SAS, Roamer. Many extended sizes and widths. I have slogged through big water puddles and they still look like new.
I really loved my Teva Niyama Flats until I wore them out! I was able to walk all over in them. I think they are discontinued now, but you might be able to get them on sale somewhere or on Amazon.

Mephisto Allrounders offer a few Mary Jane styles (e.g. Nero, Nimbo etc.). These are actually a cross between a Mary Jane and a very comfortable walking sneaker, so they work well for both city walking and hikes. I usually purchase them in basic black or beige, but they are also available in a variety of brighter colors. Although Mephisto is a French company, their Allrounder line is made in Asia and is less expensive than the Mephistos made in France. I highly recommend these shoes for European travel.
I wore Keen's Mary Janes in burgundy leather on a river cruise of Christmas Markets. Very comfortable and stylish. Lots of support.
