Hanwag shoes

Anyone have experience with Hanwag shoes? I like the look of them for travel, but tried some on and they seem quite narrow and stiff. Wondering if they will stretch a bit as they break in, and if they are comfortable for walking several miles a day. They seem more popular in Europe than the US, but hoping someone might have tried them.

What style (hiking, trekking, travel)? And what kind of upper material were you trying? What happens when you go up a half size? Still too narrow?

My rule of thumb is if it's too narrow in the store it will be too narrow with thick socks or swollen feet. So look for a pair with a proper fit to start with.

I'm looking at the travel, low cut style with a combination of suede and canvas-type fabric. I tried on a couple different low cut styles in my normal size and one size up and found them all to be a bit more narrow through the width than I'm used to with other brands, though not uncomfortable. I've bought a lot of different travel & hiking shoes and they will obviously fit differently after being broken in than they do in the store, which is why I was asking for firsthand knowledge. I've also noticed that different brands have a typical fit in all their shoes, though some stretch and break in more than others. Have you owned any Hanwags?

My spouse tried Hanwag but bought Lowa. He loves the latter. Made in Slovakia, which is as good as made in Germany. Mind you, most European shoes are narrow compared to US shoes.

Take it from someone with problem feet: if the shoes are too narrow now, they will not get better. Find a different brand that is comfortable right out of the box. Then break them in thoroughly before your trip. The last thing you want when traveling is sore feet.

I agree with horsewoofie. I have wide feet, and have once or twice been convinced that the too narrow shoe will stretch. No, or at least, not enough. Get something that fits out of the box. Please.

I currently own 2 pairs of Hanwag Canyon Futura hiking boots (women's), 2 pairs of Hanwag Banks Gore-Tex hiking boots (1 women's & 1 men's) and 2 pairs of Hanwag Gritstone II Gore-Tex low hiking shoes (1 women's, 1 men's). All are Euro size 39 and are 1 to 5 years old. They all look practically new. I wear them often, but take good care of them. I prefer the men's versions as they are just a smidge larger in the toebox. I use the boots for long day hikes or multiple days of hiking and the low hikers for travel and more groomed trails. The soles and body of all of these are stiff, but I like the support in general and the ankle support, and I still have a good "ground feel". And they are well cushioned around the ankle and in the tongue, so feel very comfy. All can be resoled. I like Lowa (Renegade) and Vasque also, but they don't hold up like Hanwag does. But I don't think they stretch or loosen up significantly, so I think it's good advice not to buy if they don't feel good right out of the box. I only try on travel shoes with the socks that I'll be wearing with them, and only in the late afternoon when my feet are largest. Hope that helps!

Thanks, Grace! That is exactly the feedback that I’m looking for from someone who has tried them firsthand. I think others have mid-read what I’m asking. I’m not looking for advice of how to find the right shoe. I have plenty of experience buying travel shoes, I just have no experience with Hanwag and it is hard to find many reviews online. The shoes I tried on didn’t hurt or feel bad, they are just noticeably more snug width wise than American brands I’m used to. I appreciate your detailed input.

I forgot to mention that a few styles come in wide or bunion (built on a bunion last, so definitely wider in the toebox), but I've only seen those on the Hanwag website or in Germany.
