Hey everyone! I am going to Rome in late August early Steptember. I am going to bring tennis shoes but I was wondering what ballet flats are good for Rome! Let me know!
Converse Allstars (Chucks) Crocs, Birkenstocks etc.
But you know no feet agree the same; you have go to a shoe store something like
the Walking Company https://www.thewalkingcompany.com/
and try different stuff on.
If I want a flat in Rome I check with airbnb.
Everyone's feet are different so not everyone would be able to manage standard flats for 10-15 miles a day. You're going to be walking over everything from cobblestones to uneven pavement to smooth stone which is deadly slippery when it's wet. I find I need a shoe with a fair amount of support, cushion, and a good grip for sightseeing in Italy. Personally? I wouldn't bring marginally supportive, smooth-bottom flats for anything but a short walk to dinner.
Being I only bring two pairs of shoes (wear one/pack one) to keep the luggage weight down, both pairs have to be broken in and able to withstand a full day of walking. Bring your tennies, for sure, but your 2nd pair should be just as sturdy and comfortable.
A lot of cobblestones and marble flooring (interiors). Rome can be pretty brutal on feet and calves so unless you're going a short distance, make sure your flats have decent arch support or take insoles with you.
No, ballet flats will not work. You need good walking sandals, there are tons out there. They are not cheap either. Keens, Merrells, Tevas...dozens. You feet will ache, your calves will ache. They need good soles. You can search this forum for lots of recommendations. Thank goodness for Zappos return policy.
Last September for a month in Italy I packed a well broken in pair of Dansko sandals and Keen Newport in black. That is all I needed for light hiking, city walking, rain, sunshine, heat and evenings. For a bike tour of Rome I put on a pair of low cut athletic socks for extra padding just in case. I have never worn a flat that would have been suitable for walking on all of the surfaces in Rome. We just returned from 10 days in Eastern Europe where it was chilly, wet and windy and I wore one pair of shoes every day all day....Naot Mary Jane with trouser socks. Comfort over style!!!!
I can't fathom walking in flats in Rome either. I wore ever-controversial athletic shoes or Merrill sandals, well broken in. Of course in sandals, my feet were filthy by the end of the day. City dirt and grime - yuck. If you are one of those rare people who can stand to be in flats all day, I wouldn't take any you're particularly fond of because I'm afraid they'd be ruined.
I agree, most flats wouldn't be supportive enough for miles of walking and navigating the cobblestones. My feet were happy wearing Keen Rose sandals and Born leather sandals on my 2 trips to Rome over the past year. I liked that both options were comfy and just a little dressier than athletic sandals or sneakers. There are lots of options; Keen makes a flat and mary jane style too. Good luck and have a fabulous time!
I agree that a good pair of sandals is better. I was there at same timeframe two years ago and I had sandals and they were perfect for the weather, walking around on cobblestones, etc.
I had another pair of shoes that I rarely wore, it was just too hot.
Thanks Ladies! I'll need to go buy a pair of sandals! I might just bring a pair of flats for dinner and if we decided to go out at night!
I think it totally depends on you and your feet whether or not you can get away with flats for the day. When I was in Rome a few years ago I wore Toms for walking for multiple days with no problem. Since then however, I have developed plantar fasciitis and need more supportive shoes. I wouldn't automatically discard the idea of flats if your feet can handle it.
