Alternative To Rockports (Male)

For over 20 years, I've been wearing Rockport Dress Shoes for my travels. Comfortable, durable, looks good both casual and dressy.

But I'm thinking.....maybe it's time to try something new. I can always go back to Rockports but sometimes change is good.

I need:

Black, dressy looking walking shoes
Very comfortable--almost like wearing sneakers (That's what I like about Rockports.)
Wide foot and toebox
Good, grippy sole
prefer laces

I know RS uses Ecco but the design he uses wouldn't cut it for me.

Suggestions on brands and models?

Since my travels will be extended, I'm also looking for a possible second pair--very lightweight, black, doesn't need to be as dressy, packs tight, to be worn in the shoulder season in Europe.

You might look at Clarks. I have the Wave version, which are slip-ons (to get past airport security easier), but they do make many kinds of lace-ups. Mine are very comfortable even on huge walking days; also waterproof, which has come in handy.

After 15 years of traveling, I sincerely say stick with your Rockports! My husband has worn them on every trip, different styles from time to time. But seriously every time that we have tried to be different and try something else we have always been sorry. As long as you are wearing nice looking clothes and are comfortable that is what is important. Everyone's feet are so different most people only have a couple brands that really work.

Keen shoes may have the width and toe box you need. I've worn them in the past. Now my favorite shoes are Merrells. For more ideas look in the FootSmart catalog.

Hotter boots. Gore-Tex lined, incredibly comfortable, great soles. I purchased a pair of Focus style boots six months ago; the most comfortable shoe I have ever owned.

I love my Keens and wore them on Heart of Italy tour in 2013. We're signed up for Village Italy this fall, and I'm considering some nice Rockport walking shoes that I've been wearing enough to make sure they're broken in and comfortable. They're better looking than the Keens, but I'm also considering taking along some Keen sandals as a backup pair of "shoes." None of these are black, so they wouldn't work for you.

Another vote for SAS. I switched from Rockports over 20 years ago and never regretted it

Don't write off Ecco based on Rick's fashion choices. They make many dressier styles both lace up and slip on. I used to wear them to the office which included a lot of walking to/from transit and found them very comfortable. They do have thick rubber sole that keeps me from wearing them with a really nice suit but for anything less than that they are great. I have both the Seattle and Helsinki styles.

Unfortunately, Ecco's won't work for me as I have a very wide foot.

I broke down this week and got a new pair of Rockports. World Tour Classic. I got them at Zappos. Free overnight shipping.

Glad you got something that works. Fit is absolutely the most important factor for comfortable shoes.

I was originally thinking that the World Tours only came in a pebbled finish but I just checked and see that they have a smooth leather as well. They look like my old pair of Rockport ProWalkers more than the current ProWalkers do. Back then you could have them resoled. The second time I had them resoled with a Vibram hiking style sole and set them aside to use just for trips where there will be a lot of trail type walking.

DH starting to think of shoes. He will be wearing long tailored looking shorts for touring during the day, different colors...from rust, blue, Navy, khaki. At home, he normally would wear something that looked like a boat shoe...speery or dockers. He will be bringing comfy shoes for the times he wears long pants, like those discussed here. He doesn't want to wear sandals and expose his feet. So, what type of shoes would look best for these outfits? I'm sort of doing this research for him, he's not putting a lot of thought into it, and we are less than a month out. He's a runner, so being on his feet for miles isn't the issue...but I don't think he wants to wear athletic shoes and socks. Argh! But I tell him I don't think those boat shoes will feel good after 5 miles...any suggestions would be helpful.
