I will be in Gent for 4 days and nights. I plan to take day trips to Brugges, Yypres and possibly Antwerp. Is it more convenient to stay at a hotel near St. Pieters or in the center of town.

The old center is where the action and charm is but you have to take the tram number 1 ( I think) each day trip to get to the train station. It is about a 30 minute walk otherwise

Stay in the center of town. There's not much going on near the train station--but there's plenty of action in the city center.

For Antwerpen you can also use the train station Gent-Dampoort, which is closer to the centre with a nice walk.
