We are traveling by train from Brussels and would like to visit Luxembourg and Vianden. Anyone know of small tours either from Brussels, or from Luxembourg? We have time to spend 3 days with Luxembourg as a base, if it is better than day trips. Thanks!.
It is an easy train ride from Brussels to Luxembourg City. And back,
Yes, the train is easy. And Luxembourg has a great bus system - you can buy a day pass (unless it's free now?) to take unlimited buses and trains all over the country to go anywhere. From Luxembourg City, I visited Vianden, Diekirch, and the American military cemetery at Hamm (where Patton is buried, if that matters to you). Very easy to get around on your own. I'm guessing it's easy to pick up local tours once you get there if you prefer.
I would spend the three days in Luxembourg rather than day trips from Brussels. Luxembourg has a wonderful public transportation system. When we were there, 24-hour train/bus passes were just 4 euros.
I would also recommend staying in the small charming town of Ettelbruck rather than Luxembourg City. Ettelbruck is a transportation hub; we stayed in Diekirch, and on every day trip, we connected to our train/bus in Ettelbruck. It has great restaurants and a lovely market square.
Two interesting places to see are the war museum in Diekirch and the Family of Man photo exhibit in Clervaux. Have a great trip!
Thanks for your input - we'll stay in Luxembourg and see th countryside from there.
