The best ice cream in the world is made in Brussels

The best ice cream in the world is made in Brussels. That’s according to the jury of the Gelato Festival World Masters: the world championship of ice cream making in Las Vegas. The gold medal went to Christian Wu from Brussels, who paid a delicious tribute to Winnie the Pooh with his ‘Il Bosco dei cento Acri’.

He and his wife trained in Padua (Italy), where the painter Giotto left behind some magnificent frescoes. The name of their business, Gelateria Giotto, is therefore a nod to the place where they learnt their trade.

Sometimes the best iconic foods can often be found outside their native birthplace. I put this down to more effort being made by the producers to create the best of what they choose to make, usually it's something they've enjoyed on holiday whereas some native producers tend to rest on their laurels or cut corners due to cost or labour intensity.

The best pizza I've eaten was in Warsaw, the worst was in Rome. Best burger was in Glasgow. Best sorbet was in Soller etc.

It's one reason why some of the best food can come from food trucks and pop-ups. The owners are very passionate about their food and they want it to be the best and this is evident in the food they produce.

The best fries I've ever had were in a small town near Mainz, in Germany.
