We are taking a long weekend to Belgium, and wanted to ask folks that rent cars which city you recommend? Are we better off picking up a rental from the train station in Brussels and driving to Ghent and North Sea. Or take another train to Ghent, and rent from there? Thanks! Also which rental company do you like to use? We are coming from London on the Eurostar.
I would pick up the car in Ghent as you leave for the North Sea, as you don't need a car in Ghent if that's where you're staying. Trains are very frequent, and you avoid the often troublesome traffic around Brussels.
You can book a Eurostar ticket to "Any Belgian Station" if you haven't booked your tickets yet, and it will include the ticket to Ghent. Or it's very easy to buy a ticket separately.
For car rental I like to use Autoeurope, a consolidator, to check for the best price. It also includes a star rating of the rental car companies. I've had consistently good experiences with Hertz, Sixt and Avis in Europe, but there are other reputable companies.
We did purchase our train tickets already, but since I thought we could have lunch in Brussels I don't mind getting a separate ticket to Ghent. Thanks for your help with the car rental! :)
