Overnight in Brussels

I will be traveling in Europe at the end of April and first part of May. I'll spend one night in Brussels staying at a hotel in the Ixelles area, Ave Du Haut Pont 2 to be more accurate. Can anybody tell me about the area especially with the recent terrorist activity? How close is it to where the raids have been happening? I also noticed on the map there seems to be a prison in the area. In the U.S. usually prisons are not located in the better part of the cities. One last thing which station would you recommend Midi or Central?

Thank you

I am no expert on Brussels, but on the terrorist topic; I just have to believe that by April the western world will have taken the action necessary to restore confidence even among the skeptics. If I wanted to be in Brussels or Paris in the spring I would go ahead and buy my tickets now and hope for some good rates. I think pretty fast on my feet and if come April the situation is such that I don't feel comfortable there are always great options nearby. Its a big world and there is a lot to see. Plan it and I bet all goes well and you have an outstandingly good time.

You're worrying about what might happen six months from now? This is exactly the totally irrational, unfounded, senseless fear they want to create. The neighbourhood of your hotel is alright and far away from Molenbeek, where the police raids took place. Does that make it a more probable target or not?

Check in April. No one can say what things will be like six months from now.

Don't worry the neighboorhood is nice. Gare du midi is closer.

If you're staying in Ixelles, you're nowhere near the raids, which have taken place in Molenbeek and to a lesser extent, Anderlecht. I havent' spent much time in Ixelles but it is a very nice place. I take it this is your first trip to Brussels?

Gare du Midi is a little closer, but both are reachable by public transport.

If you are travelling by an international train (Eurostar, Thalys, or ICE) you will have to use Midi. All Belgian domestic trains serving Brussels stop at both stations. Midi is probably easier to reach from Ixelles.
