Navigating around Liege, Belgium

Hello,
Traveling to Belgium at the end of April, 2025 and specificially will be in Liege for a couple of days. Is it possible to get into the countryside via bus or train?
How pedestrian friendly is this city. I believe our hotel reservations are across the main road and river.
thanks!

I presume this is for a concert or sporting event? Liege is otherwise not a tourist target in Belgium. I have not visited, but I understand that it's a bit of a post-industrial survivor. The relatively new Calatrava-designed train station is quite remarkable, which can be seen from the steps of your train when it stops there.

Do you mean outdoorsy hiking nearby, or do you mean the usual top destinations way over in Flanders? You're also close to Cologne, Aachen, and Dusseldorf. Harder to get to Monschau, I think.

The reason for spending time in Liege is to see the famous Liege-Bastogne-Liege cycling race on Sunday, April 27, 2025. We arrive via train from Brussels. We only plan to be there for the cycling race and then be on to other places in Belgium.
thanks!

I'll be visiting Liege in May for the first time. One thing to note is that Liege's modern tramway line is supposed to be opening in mid-April, which will probably lead to big changes in local bus services. So if you do your research pre-tramway, everything might be different when you get there.
