I will be on a tight budget and I'm driving. I need to visit Mechelen, Halle and Brussels for research. I'm thinking it might be cost-efficient and less crowded to stay in Mechelen or Halle and take a train to Brussels. Has anyone else done this? I'm not looking forward to driving into the city and finding parking. Thanks.
Yeah, avoid driving the Brussels ring if you can. But Halle and Mechelen are easy enough to reach via public transport, so I don't think it matters where you stay.
Thanks Tom. Usually I don't worry, but it looked somewhat confusing. Thanks again!

As I live in Mechelen, I can confirm that it is a good idea to stay in charming Mechelen. http://toerisme.mechelen.be/en/
And it is very convenient to go to Brussels by train (less expensive than to pay parking and less stressfull).
Here you can retrieve the time schedule: http://www.railtime.be/website/home-en
Depending where you have to be, you can take the metro if needed https://www.stib-mivb.be/netplan-plan-reseau.html?l=en
If you need more specific info, don't hesitate.

note: Mechelen is more convenient than Halle (I lived before near Halle)
