Luxembourg City and Beyond

As part of our June trip to Western Europe we will be visiting Luxembourg. We will likely have about 4-5 days to spend in Luxembourg. We are assuming Luxembourg City would be the best place to stay as a home base. Our intention is to travel using public transportation and bicycles. I got a few ideas from another user's post, but welcome any other suggestions. We are interested in culture, architecture, history, and art, but weather permitting enjoy being outdoors rather than spending all of our time in museums. We enjoy biking and hiking and definitely want to see the country of Luxembourg, not just the city. Suggestions for cycling in the city and beyond would be especially helpful. I am also curious as to what part of the city would be best to look for lodging taking into consideration we will be on bike, foot, bus, and trains. Can anyone recommend a good bicycle renting company? Has anyone done an organized city tour by bike?

Thank you,

Donna

Instead of Luxembourg City, I recommend staying in the lovely town of Ettelbruck. It's a transportation hub for both trains and buses, so it sounds ideal for you. And in 2014, we could get a one day pass good on any combination of trains and buses in Luxembourg for just 4 euros per person. It's probably gone up a little by now but still a wonderful bargain.

We stayed in nearby Diekirch, and used public transportation, and every trip went through and/or changed in Ettelbruck. We were wishing we had stayed there instead! Ettelbruck has a great pedestrian-only main square lined with cafes. There's a market on Friday mornings. A George Patton museum. Really charming.

From Ettelbruck, day trips could include Diekirch, for the amazing WWII museum; to Viandon, to see the castle; to Clervaux, to see the Family of Man exhibit. And of course a day trip into Lux City, although we never even made it there.
