We will have a six hour layover at Brussels Airport, late in November, and we would like to make a short visit to the historical city center. But I know security is more tight and lines are longer since the tragic bombing earlier this year. Airport’s website suggests arriving two hours before departure for Schengen destinations and our luggage will be already checked in to our final destination (Warsaw) . But I’d like to hear from someone who experienced it lately.
Thank you very much !
We did this in July, had no problems at all taking the train into town and back, we allowed the two hours but there were no lines. I am a worry wart and am glad I allowed the 2 hours to navigate the airport just in case. Go for it! We took a chocolate tour, something a little different to do.
Thank you for your advice, it is very much appreciated!
Another option is to head the opposite direction by train and check out Leuven. It's only 15min from the airport and gives you an alternative to the big city of Brussels.
But either can be done easily with a 6 hr layover.

Yes, do this. You will have plenty of time and the airport train goes to Central Station and the heart of Brussels. Have lunch at Pres de Chez Nous, a fabulous new restaurant just off Rue des Bouchers, but not at all touristy.
Thanks to everyone of you. My understanding is that even with additional security measures that may still be in effect at the airport, we will have time to see the Grand-Place. And thank you for your restaurant suggestions, we will think about it !
