My wife and I are going to be stopping off for about 5 hours in Brussels between trains from Amsterdam and to Paris. We are interested in finding a good place to eat lunch and enjoy some Belgian beers near Grand Place. From what I am reading so far, the tacky rip off places seem to be widespread. I would welcome any suggestions. Thank you!
To my opinion you will find better places for lunch around Grote Zavel / Grand Sablon, some 10min walk south of Grand-Place.
We really enjoyed le roy d'espagne. Great service and good food. Not sure if price was right but didn't care because the Grand Place pays for itself with its scenery and atmosphere.
If you are willing to pay a bit extra for the view, I agree that the Roy d'Espagne isn't bad.
My TA review of La Chaloupe d'or which faces Grand Place:
I had a very nice lunch here. It's easy to find, right on Grand Place, and a lovely room inside. My shrimp scampi/noodles dish was wonderful with a couple nice local beers.
