Ghent Sint Pieters

Hi

I will be taking a trip to Europe early next year - I will be starting from Copenhagen. I am booked for 2N3D at Ghent and from Ghent I plan to travel to Amsterdam.
I have come across updates that the Ghent train station is under renovation & that it may be cumbersome to exit the station since escalators may or may not be functional.
Can someone who has recently traveled to Ghent with luggage throw some light on whether escalators are functional or one would have to take strairs only

Thank you

I was in Ghent a few weeks ago. There is some construction happening in the station as you note. I did have to climb up/down stairs a few times, but my recollection is that it was usually just a few steps - maybe half a flight. I certainly can’t recall climbing anything more than a flight. I didn’t attempt to look for lifts or escalators so don’t know if they are available or not. But I would say that unless you are unable to lift your luggage at all, you will be okay - it wasn’t a huge amount of stair-climbing.

We took the train from Lille to Ghent with heavy luggage in April. There was no construction going on but I recall there was a non working elevator and so we had to carry our luggage down quite a wide steep stairway. Now this completely contradicts poorvi205's recall; so hopefully someone else with conviction will jump in.

Passengers with luggage aren’t the only ones who rely on elevators and/or escalators. So do people with disabilities, walking problems etc.and they too need to be able to use public transport. So even during the renovation, the platforms of Gent St. Pieters can be reached by elevators and/or escalators.

Ghent has a second train station (Dampoort) that is much more user-friendly. It's actually closer to the old city than Sint Pieters station. The two platforms at Dampoort have escalator and/or elevator access where needed.

The construction at Gent st. Pieters has been going on for several years now, and involve the complete replacement of all the platforms, canopies, stairs etc. They are doing it platform by platform, as they need to continue operating. It is hard to miss.

Train on the Brussels - Brugge - Coast axis already mostly use the new platforms. But trains on the Kortrijk - Antwerpen axis indeed are mostly still arriving / leaving from the old platforms.
