This might be an odd question, but which town would you choose to see at night?
Context is that we are visiting both for one day trip each, but only have one day that we would be able to stay until after dark.
So, anyone have an opinion?
TIA
I loved Bruges at night. I got some great pictures of the Rozenhoedkaai (Quay of the Rosary) and some of the bridges at night.
I loved both towns especially Ghent, but for an evening after dark we thoroughly enjoyed our wandering through Bruges.
Bruges at night is an entirely different experience. It’s pretty shocking how many day trippers there are. We were in Ghent on a sunny spring afternoon and it was magic. Tons of locals picnicking and hanging canal side. Not nearly as crowded as Bruges. You’ll enjoy both.
I was in Bruges only during the day so I can't compare. I know that as a university town, Ghent has more clubs and things to do in the evening that are not mainly for tourists though I did not go to any. I did do an eveniong walking tour in Ghent that was fun, interesting, and took us to some nice nighti time photo ops that I would not have known about.
I would choose Bruges, especially since you'll be there during the crowded day. When the day trippers start clearing out in late afternoon, you'll be able to appreciate the magic of Bruges.
The answer isn’t that difficult.
Choose Bruges if you want to spend a romantic evening with your partner in a fairytale setting. The Historic Center of the city of Bruges is mostly reconstructed and so it is not medieval. In the 1850s Bruges was one of the poorest cities in Belgium and was largely in ruins. Most of its buildings are a reconstruction and recreation from the late 19th, early and mid-20th centuries that imitate the medieval style.
Choose Ghent if you want to enjoy a lively atmosphere, lovely cafés and a real city vibe.
I did spend an evening there, and the difference after the day crowds left was huge. During the day it felt busy, but once it got dark, everything slowed down, walking around the canals near Markt Square and Burg Square, it became quiet enough to really take it in, the lights reflecting on the water, the old buildings, and the empty streets made it feel like a completely different place, i remember just wandering without a plan, and that ended up being one of my favorite moments of the trip
I also spent an evening in Ghent, and while i really liked it, it felt more like a normal city at night, there were more locals out, restaurants were busy, and it had a livelier atmosphere, the area around Graslei was beautiful with the buildings lit up, but it didn’t have that same calm, almost storybook feeling, so if you’re choosing just one place to stay out after dark, i’d go with Bruges. Ghent is great during the day, but Bruges is the one that really stayed with me at night.
Thank you everyone! I think Bruges sounds the most appealing.
