Ghent for a week in september

We are planning to make our hotel base in Ghent and take the train for day trips to Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp, and Ostend. We see a lot of positive feedback on staying at the Harmony Hotel. Looking for any hidden gems for lunch and dinner in Ghent and Bruges.

OMG PLEASE get Flemish stew at Meme Gusta in Ghent. Make a reservation. All four in my travel party LOVED it and said we can probably never eat it again anywhere else bc it will never be this delicious again. :)

And yes Harmony Hotel was fabulous. Also visit the castle and get the comedy audio tour. Hysterical.

We have eaten twice at Cambrinus in Bruges and liked it both trips!

Make sure you visit the markets in Ghent. They have them every day scattered around but on Sunday there are usually multiple markets. It would be worth stopping in at the visitor center to get more information on them.

We ate the waterzooi (fish soup) at 't Klokhuys in the Patershol district, and it was delicious--the best dish we ate in Ghent. For a casual lunch or just a beer head to Barrazza in the Korenmarkt right alongside the River Leie, our table was mere inches from the water. A few people paddled up in kayaks and bought beer to take out on the water.

Two Ghent recommendations...

1) On a sunny afternoon, grab a patio table at Het Waterhuis alongside the canal [ https://visit.gent.be/en/eat-drink/waterhuis-aan-de-bierkant ]. Order Avec Les Bons Voeux, and enjoy one of the best beers in the world.

2) Just outside St Bavo's Cathedral sits Chocolaterie Van Hoorebeke [ https://visit.gent.be/en/see-do/chocolaterie-van-hoorebeke ]. Ask the proprietor to assemble a mix of 'this and that' (it's all good), making sure a piece or two with lemongrass finds its way into the box.

We were in Ghent a few Septembers ago, great time of year to be there.

Listen to this man, for he is right on both counts. The Waterhuis and Avec are proof God wants us to be happy -- until the next day, when the Devil has his say in the matter.

There's also a genever shop next door that will allow you to sample the many, many, MANY fine examples of this particular spirit. A word of warning: do not try to go shot-for-shot with a Britisher, at least not the one I was seated next to.

You are going to LOVE Ghent!
