Getting to Bastogne...what's my best option?

I will be traveling from Berchtesgaden, Germany to Bastogne where I have a Battle of The Bulge tour planned on the 1st of June. I plan to arrive in Bastogne the 31st of May.

I originally planned to break up the travel between the afternoon of the 30th and the morning of the 31st. There is a train route that leaves Berchtesgaden around 2:30 and arrives in Saarbrucken just in time for the last bus to Luxembourg. I planned to spend the night in Luxembourg, get a rental car in the morning and stop at museums on the way to Bastogne.

My concern is the morning of the 30th is my Eagle's Nest day and I'm not sure I can get through it and the documentation center by 2pm. Maybe I can? If not, should I just stay in Berchtesgaden one more night and make the 31st a dedicated travel day and miss out on being able to see the museum on my route to Bastogne? Or leave on a later train but stay in Saarbrucken overnight then bus over to Lux in the morning?

Maybe there is a better place for me to travel to after Berchtesgaden to stay/pick up a rental car from prior to Bastogne?

I would spend the night of the 30th in Saarbrucken. Arriving "just in time for the last bus to Luxembourg" would make me nervous about the whole trip.

Are you going to stop in Reims on your way to Bayeux? The 82nd and 101st Airborne were stationed there before they were sent to Belgium - as you certainly know. The Surrender Museum is well worth a visit.

Thanks for the resonse. I agree with your idea. I did more research of Czech trains (its a direct Czech train I get on at Freilassing to Saarbrucken)...it's not the fastest or most reliable it seems.

I am definitely going to stay in Saarbrucken and bus the next morning to Lux. It works out since hotels seem to be a lot cheaper than Lux.

I wish I could fit in a stop at Reims, but unfortunately I have to be in Caen by 5pm to be able to pick up my rental car to Bayeux.
