I am very confused and hoping someone has the answer. We’re traveling by train from Amsterdam to Liège, Belgium. I have read that the ETIAS program will start the in the last quarter of 2026. But if traveling across borders by land, that is by train, bus or car, a tourist currently needs the ETIAS documentation. Has anyone dealt with this issue ?
Once you have entered the Schengen zone (which you would do in Amsterdam, if that is your arrival city), there are no further border control checks (as a rule) when you travel from one Schengen country to another. If and when ETIAS goes into effect, you would obtain it before going to Europe and it would be electronically attached to your passport. ETIAS is neither needed, nor indeed possible at present. What IS currently being implemented is the EES which is the new Entry/Exit system at Passport Control at arrival points into Schengen zone. There is nothing for you to do in advance for this. You just use the kiosks and follow instructions.
TLDR? You don't need anything to go from one Schengen country to another (although as a foreigner you must travel with your passport.).
ETIAS is not in effect anywhere at the current time.
