Emissions Compliance in Belgium

This past summer we leased (not rented) a car in France and then went on to travel around Germany. Before the trip, we learned that a German emissions sticker would be required for us to drive in Germany with our French car. We were able to do this at the first city we stayed in after we crossed the French border into Germany. It took part of an afternoon to get to the right facility, which was similar to an American emissions testing station, contrary to what we were told by others that certain auto repair/auto parts companies offer the service. Once at the right place, it was quick and inexpensive to get the green windshield sticker.

For 2025, we plan to do a similar trip, but this time go from France into Belgium. The information I have found so far seems to indicate a sticker is not required for Belgium, but free advanced registration is. In order to do this, one must have serial numbers and other information that we will not have until we pick up the car. Can we go to a facility once in Belgium and get registered? Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks,

Chris

Belgium has its own system regarding emissions and it isn’t anything like the system in Germany. But first, are you sure you even need to worry about this? The only Belgian cities that require you to register your car for their Low Emission Zones are Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. Driving in these cities isn’t recommended, because of narrow streets, one way streets, scarce parking spaces etc etc. The easiest and most relaxed way to get around in this densely populated area is public transport.
If you do decide to drive into these LEZ’s it’s up to you to register your car online in advance for each LEZ. No one is going to do that for you or facilitate you. Failure to register your car will result in an automatic fine, which your rental company will only be to happy to charge you for.
