We have time for just one day trip from Brussels—to either Antwerp, Bruges or Ghent. What do you suggest?
Antwerp is another city, I’d pass. Bruges for actual sightseeing, Ghent if you just walk to kick around and chill.
Bruges is very crowded; Ghent, somewhat less so. Both are worth visiting though.
Leuven would be another option - it’s a beautiful little university city, and somewhat off the beaten track.
I'd probably pick Ghent because it's closer and you likely won't feel like your in tourist central during the daytime. Bruges was outstanding in the evening, but was crowded in the daytime even in October last year when we were there. I can't speak for Antwerp.
Since you’re looking for just one, I recommend Ghent. It’s the perfect middle ground, it has the stunning canals and medieval architecture of Bruges, but it feels like a real, vibrant city rather than a tourist museum.
If you want a pure fairytale vibe, pick Bruges, but expect crowds. If you prefer high fashion and grand architecture, choose Antwerp. However, for most travelers, Ghent is the local favorite for a reason!
Enjoy!
Bruges is wonderful, but keep in mind you will be part of the crowd of day trippers.
If you can plan to stay in Bruges in the evening before heading back to Brussels, you'll find a totally different Bruges.
When you go to parties back home, people will mostly ask you about Bruges. Do you prefer art, architecture, fashion, food, etc.? Month of year? # in party?
I stayed in Ghent and did daytrips to Bruges and Antwerp. I liked Ghent best as a place to stay. but all 3 were great to visit. The Ghent Altarpiece, also called the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Van Eyck in St Bravo's Cathedral in Ghent would make Ghent the first choice among the 3 towns for some (like me). And there are other things to see and do in Ghent. But if the Altarpiece is not a priority for you, then Bruges might make the best daytrip for its combination of visual charm, lovely places to walk, compactness, and art (Groeningemuseum and Michelangelo madonna in Our Lady Church). Ghent and Bruges both have scenic canal boat rides.
Hi, I was actually in all three cities this month. Pick Bruges, no hesitation! Antwerp and Ghent are fine, but Bruges all day. And BTW, we did Bruges and Ghent in a single day, trip so you can do both if you like.
Thank you! Did you use a car or train to do both? We’ll most likely be traveling by train.
Absolutely no need for a car. Both Bruges and Ghent are on the same train line.
Travelling between cities in Belgium (and Netherlands too) is most efficient by train. No worry about traffic jams, road works or loosing time finding a parking. A train ride between Brussels and Ghent takes around 35 min., you can't beat that with a car. The same to Bruges, taking around an hour.
So travelling by train is a good idea.
