We are traveling from Amsterdam to Bruges. I dont believe there are any direct trains, but is there bus service?

There are no direct trains, but that should not be an issue. Changing trains is a normal and expected feature of train travel. Book this on www.nsinternational.com.
Long distance bus travel in this part of Europe is for people for whom price trumps everything, even personal safety...

Flixbus has 5 or 6 direct buses daily from Amsterdam Sloterdijk.
They are not especially cheap, being around the same price as the train.
