Brussels to Bruges by train

Hi. We're staying in Brussels for three days in early June and plan to take a day trip to Bruges by train.
Should we reserve train tickets in advance, or is it fine to just show up at the station? We'd expect to head to Bruges after breakfast and return to Brussels in time for, or after, dinner. Thanks! Alan in Virginia

Trains in Belgium are mass transit. You can’t book tickets for a train, tickets cost the same no matter when you buy them and trains have free seating. A ticket Brussels-Bruges allows you to take any train from Brussels to Bruges on the day mentioned on your ticket.
See the website of the Belgian national railway company for all details, fares, tickets, train schedules etc https://www.belgiantrain.be/en

I haven't checked, but there are likely to be four or five trains an hour during the business day, a bit fewer outside that. You might have to stand at rush hour or school hours.

The Bruges train station is not at the old market square, but busses stop at the train station. I think, different bus cards than in Brussels. Sales machines by bus stop, need small bills or chip & pin card.
