Brussels bound

Hello out there: we are going to be spending four or five nights in Belgium. The lodging seems a bit too high near popular destinations. Does anyone know of decent and safe lodging that is just outside of the city, if need be, that is less pricey, yet easily accessible to downtown Brussels.?
We are active seniors seeing Brussels for the first time!

Brussels is OK, but it's not where I would choose to spend the majority of my time in Belgium. I assume you're planning to go elsewhere, too - how much of your time are you planning for Brussels (versus Bruges, Ghent, etc.)?

I also agree that you should stay a shorter time in Brussels and move on to
Brugges, Gent..

any information for lodgings in either Bruges or Gent would be appreciated. Also about how much per night is about average for 1 room, 2 adults..

Bob, it might work better if you'd give us some idea of your desired per-night budget and dates you'll be traveling?

You should read the replies to your London post. The answers there really apply to any city.

You will like consistently overlooked Mechelen (also known in its French form as Malines), halfway between Antwerp and Brussels. Nice, quiet, historical, essentially Flemish city. Popular with the locals, but hardly visited by foreigners. Twenty minutes from the centre of both cities with trains departing every 10 or 15 minutes. To Gent it is 1 hr, and a further 30 mins to Bruges (Brugge).

In Bruges we stayed at Huis Koning B&B and highly recommend it. In Ghent we stayed at Hotel Harmony. It was a nice hotel, centrally located by Gravensteen Caatle, and we thought reasonably priced. You can look them up on TripAdvisor or a site of your preference and plug in your dates to get a price. To me, Brussels merits only one night. In Brussels, we stayed at Hotel Le Legende, a couple minutes walk from the Grand Lace. It was adequate for one night but could use some renovations.
