Brussels airport timing

I was reading in Rick’s book that when traveling to countries not in the Schengen-zone (what I’ve come to understand is the EU) you should arrive to the Brussels Airport (Zaventem) 3 hours before your flight.
This is what their website says:
We recommend arriving at least 2 hours prior to scheduled time of departure to allow time for any unforeseen circumstances.
For flights outside the Schengen-zone, arriving 3 hours before the flight is advised.

We’re traveling to Edinburgh from Brussels in early May and I just wanted to get some insight if this is indeed needed. Seems excessive, but I know there was a terrorist attack there in 2016, and read it was related to tightened security measures after that.

Thank you all!

I think you should go by what they tell you. It might be overkill, but so be it. At least you'll have time to relax once you have run the gauntlet. Could it be a sneaky way to get you to spend more time duty-free shopping? :-)
