Bruges to Trier, Best Method to travel and how long?

We are taking the Best of Germany, Austria, and Switzerland tour Sept. 2017. We'd like to fly into Brussels and visit Bruges pre-tour.

I'd love recommendations as the best method to get from Bruges to Trier. We have to meet our tour group on Tour Day 1 at 4 p.m. at the hotel.

Can we go from Bruges to Trier that same day? What's the best method of travel? How long should we plan?

You can. It will be a long day - roughly six hours and two or three train changes depending on the route at a current price of about 55 to 60 Euro.

The most direct route is by train from Bruges to Brussels, then Brussels to Luxembourg, and finally Luxembourg to Trier. The trains are not very fast, but there's some very attractive scenery in the southern part of Belgium as the line passes through the Ardennes.

When you search for Bruges to Trier on the DB website, you can add Cologne as a stopover, and you can then see advanced purchase saver fares for 39 euros. If you leave Bruges on the 9:08 train, you would arrive in Trier at 3:30pm, only 5 minutes later than going via Luxembourg.
