We are traveling from Bruges to Paris on 11/8.
What is the best route? Through Brussels or Antwerp?
Should we buy an advance ticket? Would that be from Bruges? or Brussels/Antwerp?

If you want to take the fast Thalys train, you should buy an advance ticket with all its restrictions.
Go to www.Thalys.com to see the options. You'll take a train from Brugge to Brussels and change there for the Thalys to Paris. I'm seeing fares as low as 36 EUR for your travel date.

going the other way paris to bruges we bought advance tickets to bruges with a change in brussels for 36 euros pp.

We took a train from Bruges to Paris - went through Brussels. Very easy. Highly recommend it. Didn't have to change trains.
