Bruges or Brussels?

We plan to spend three nights in Belgium in early June. We want to visit a relative in Brussels and also see Bruges, but just use one of them as our base. So our question is: Would people recommend three nights in Bruges or Brussels? Thanks! - Alan, Arlington VA

How much time do you want to spend with the relative? If you wanted to see them a couple of times, I'd stay in Brussels. If you just want to meet them once for lunch or an afternoon, I'd stay in Bruges.

Long ago and far away (1970's, lol) my parents lived in Brussels so I've visited a number of times for several weeks at a time and done day trips from there. However, now I prefer to stay in Bruges which to me is just picture perfect scenic. It can be crowded midday especially when there are throngs of cruise ship groups going thru so to me is more pleasant early AM or late afternoon when they are on their ships, lol.

I haven’t been to Bruges.
I did spend a few nights in Brussels in December and found it underwhelming….dare I say boring.
It has some very old buildings in the centre to look into and at, and some museums.
I think it may be better to visit in warmer weather, but I feel no need to go back.
Your relatives will know , I would think.
Bruges would be my choice for a future visit from what I have read and heard about it.

It could depend on how and where you’re arriving in Belgium and where you’re going afterwards. I like the atmosphere in Bruges and the fact that it’s smaller. It will be overrun with tourists in June. Brussels has the Grand-Place that is interesting, but to me, not much else. With only two days to see things it probably doesn’t matter which place you stay. Bruges is a short train ride from Brussels.

You have good answers, but I personally would be bored after one night in Bruges. Brussels is as described, but has many large, fine museums, and easy access to Ghent or Antwerp. Bruges has a few important tiny museums and lovely old buildings. I do vote for Bruges for you. I sleep in Antwerp.
