We are still working on our itinerary for Belgium and are now considering the Bastogne area to see Battle of the Bulge sights. Based on what we have read we can take a train only so far and will then have to take a bus to Bastogne. Is that correct? Any suggestions for tour companies and hotels? Also, what hotels in Ypres do you recommend?
We will be in Bastogne this May. Based on information in the Lonely Planet guide and reviews on TripAdvisor, we booked a tour with Reg Jans (www.regjans.com). I booked a room at Le Merceny, but I seem to recall there was another one or two that looked fine too. I don't recall there was any "stand out" hotel. We will be arriving by car as the train/bus didn't work with our schedule.
I just checked his availability for the tours and it doesn't show he is available. I will definitely look into the hotel recommendation.
Regarding Bastogne, yes, you will need to take a train from Brussels to Libramont and then a bus on to Bastogne. The buses are run by the Belgian train company SNCB, so you can buy your tickets on their website for the whole journey. It takes about 3.5 hours in total but the transfer should be smooth and easy. For hotels, I stayed at Hotel Wagon Leo, in the center of the city, which is a good value and also offers discounts at their attached restaurant.
Since you don't have a car, I recommend hiring a local guide in Bastogne. Look at reviews on the usual websites and also contact the local tourist office for their recommendations.
Ypres is a fascinating city, but I can't help you with hotels since I didn't stay overnight.
