I'm looking for good food in or around Bastogne. Any good farmers markets nearby? Adjacent city we should visit to enjoy great food? Bakeries, cafe, you'd recommend? The food in Bastogne doesn't look amazing and trying to put together some good options for my family. Thanks -
Erica
For cute cities and villages you can go to Luxembourg (country). Vianden, Clervaux, Echternach and tiny but lovely Esch-sur-Sûre. Luxembourg city, it’s historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage site and certainly worth a visit.
In Belgium you can go to Bouillon for it’s medieval fortress. Once the home of Godfrey of Bouillon, the leader of the first Crusade, Further Durbuy, tiny but loveley.
You can even consider Trier in Germany, if Roman history is of interest. But that will be a long drive.
Sedan isn't the prettiest city, but the fortress is huge, it's a strategically important river crossing that's been fought over for centuries (they held up Rommel here for 10 days in WWII), and it has a very good indoor farmers market. About an hour from Bastogne.
I should add that the Carrefour in Bastogne has a good selection of local stuff, and a decent bakery. Good wine prices too. I get picnic stuff there and then go to the memorial and sit looking out over the battlefield. (The memorial is fenced off this summer for restoration.)
