Bar etiquette in Ghent

Hi,

We have never been to Belgium before, and are visiting for the first time next weekend.

I was just wondering how the service works in the bars, do you take a table and then someone comes to you, or do you go to the bar yourself. When do you pay? before or after the drink?

Also, should the bar be very busy is it normal to stand, share a table or just to come back later?

Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I think you'll find that different bars work differently. Just ask when you enter; Belgians are nice, friendly, helpful people. Tall, though. Very tall.

You'll love Ghent, by the way.

Exactly what jphbucks says! Believe me they are all friendly and welcoming; and all you need to do is ask. I just need to add one thing to his observations. Not just tall; gorgeous, gorgeous people!!! How does this happen with a diet of beer, chocolate, frites and waffles. Loved Belgium especially Ghent so much! Enjoy!

It's usual in Belgium always as soon as you enter to greet the bar keeper or one of the waiters in a restaurant. In the first place it's regarded as polite and second they know there is a new customer. In case it is busy ask if there is a table free or if a seat is not occupied at the bar to ask if it's free too. Even if it is not busy it's always good to ask if there is a place free to sit, just to avoid something inconvenient will happen. Most of the time it's just getting a feel what you have to do, it's not so difficult.

All of the bars I have been into in Ghent, I acknowledge someone on staff, point to or just take a seat, they will ask what you want, bring it to you, pay when done.

The exception is if the place is more restaurant than bar, then definitely ask about seating as there may be reserved tables.

If there are larger tables, there is nothing wrong with asking to share a table. Standing is really only common at the bar.
