Ascension Day May 9th: Germany and Belgium

I will be in Cologne on May 9th and expect many tourist sites to be closed. Should I try to visit churches, museums, and other sites on May 7th-8th and see what I can find open the 9th?

Will be moving on to Belgium on May 10-15. Some breweries I loooked up are planning to close between May 9th and May 12th.

Are the closures for Ascension Day more of a one-day event or is it common for businesses/musuems to close for several days?

Thanks!

Because Ascension Day is always a Thursday, in Belgium some businesses which are only open on weekdays tend to also close on the Friday after Ascension and make a long weekend out of it. I do not have the impression this would happen to places catering mostly to tourists. You should check with each brewery individually, just to be sure.

Cologne: The shops are closed (you can still buy a few groceries at the railway station). Everything else is open. On friday, it's business as usual.
