We are getting ready for a river cruise (starts March 29th) through Holland and belgium. One day we are docked in Evergem, just north of Ghent. We were looking for alternatives to the scheduled land excursions to Ghent or Bruges. Any thoughts? We thought about a trip to Flanders Field....any suggestions for tour guides? thanks.
Yes, Flanders Fields (Ieper/Ypres) is a good idea, particularly if you can get out to the war cemeteries. You might think about a tour or private guide for this since your time is limited, but there is a good museum (In Flanders Fields) in Ieper itself and the Menin Gate, which is the site of the Last Post every evening at 5pm.
Another possibility might be an excursion to the Belgian coast. There is a tram (de Kusttram) that runs the length of the communities there, and some communities are more interesting than others. Start your journey in posh Knokke and the nearby nature reserve, Het Zwin. Obviously too cold still for swimming!
