Renting out a home through Airbnb isn’t necessarily illegal in Ghent, but the city government enforces very strict rules, which means that, in practice, permanently renting out entire homes to tourists is almost always prohibited.

The city of Ghent is actively cracking down on illegal vacation rentals to limit disturbances and protect affordable rental housing on the regular market.
Since the beginning of this year, Ghent has appointed 10 inspectors to go out and track down illegal tourist accommodations.

This is just to give you two pieces of advice to avoid awkward situations upon your actual arrival.

1. When people share recommendations based on their past experiences, be sure to check the current situation.
2. Check whether the provider actually has a registration number (from Toerisme Vlaanderen).

Good point re: Ghent's crackdown on illegal short-term rentals, worth double-checking any listing's registration number before booking. For your group of 4, Patershol and the Graslei/Korenlei area are the classic historic-center picks and have plenty of legit apart-hotels and 2-bedroom units (not just Airbnb) that sleep 4 comfortably, look at Raibu Aparthotel or similar serviced apartments, since those operate under proper hotel regulations rather than the Airbnb gray zone. Might be an easier route for a 4-person group than gambling on a private rental.
