We're staying three nights in Brussels and then two in Bruges. We're considering renting a car in Brussels and driving to Waterloo, Dunkerque, and Flanders Fields (Ypres) before returning the car in Bruges. Does anyone know if that's possible in one day?
You might be able to fit Waterloo and Ieper in one day, but adding Dunkerque is probably not going to work. But I emphasize the "might", because traffic delays can scuttle your plans pretty easily. The time of year makes a big difference as well. In the summer with over 18 hours of daylight, you could probably visit two. In the winter, with barely 8, not a chance.
I haven't visited Dunkerque, but of the other two, I found Ieper much more satisfying and informative. If you're expecting a Civil War type battlefield preservation at Waterloo, you might be disappointed. Historical markers are few and far between, and the museums aren't particularly well done.
Thanks. It will be in early August. I had heard that there isn't much to see, but I'll settle for just a hint of history.
