48hrs from Amsterdam

Hello,

I will have about 48hrs between departing Utrecht (Sept 1/19) and flying home to Canada (Sept 3/19) from Amsterdam; I’m considering going to Belgium...Antwerp or Bruges or Ghent. I will have been in Holland for a month when I depart so really would like a quick adventure elsewhere before heading home.
All thoughts and suggestions much appreciated:). Suzanne

Gent would be an ideal base. Only around 3 hrs from Utrecht with using the Intercity service. Good for the afternoon and evening on the day of arrival. Have the next day for Brugge, which is only 30 mins away.
You should be back near Schiphol airport the evening before departure. The slightest problem on the line or with the train between Belgium and Schiphol airport, which are not unknown, and you're in deep trouble.
Tickets for the Intercity service (have Gent-Sint Pieters as destination) for 1 Sep are a fixed EUR 35, and EUR 26 for the return trip on 2 Sep, for any train running that day (the Intercity doesn't come with reservation). You can buy them online (Belgianrail or NS International), but also at the railway station (with perhaps EUR 1 or 2 handling fee).

Thank you, that helps immensely. My flight leaves mid afternoon...do you think I would be okay leaving Ghent first thing in the morning on the 3rd or would I still be pushing it?

I wouldn't feel comfortable with the idea of being 3 hrs from the airport for an essential flight.

Hmmm....with a month in Amsterdam you should consider doing some things before the end of your stay. Take the trains...you can be almost anywhere in the surrounding areas in literal hours. Don't wait and don't cut it too close to your flight,....

Rotterdam has a modernist city-centre unlike any other and a cruise of the immense harbour is enlightening. Easy rail transport to-and-from, including Schiphol.
